Boards of Canada Roygbiv in TAL Bassline 101 – Free Presets

Demonstration of Roygbiv Bass in TAL Bassline 101

You can easily recreate the sound of the bass and lead in Boards of Canada’s song “Roygbiv” by using the TAL Bassline 101 synthesizer vst plugin. Here’s how…

One of the synthesizers used by Boards of Canada was the Roland SH-101 and TAL makes a great recreation of this classic synth named “TAL Bassline 101.” It is low-cost yet gives an authentic sound.

The controls on the TAL product are nearly identical to the original SH-101 hardware. I downloaded the original instruction booklet for the SH-101 and used that as a basis for learning how the synthesizer works.

I first started with the bass for Roygbiv. It is a deep and gritty sound. Then, I thought about it and realized that Boards of Canada probably just used the same synth to make the lead part of Roygbiv. Sure enough, if I just made a few simple changes, I had the lead as well.

Here are previews of both the bass and the lead sounds:

You will need the TAL Bassline 101 synthesizer in order to use the presets. TAL products are great and can be found on their website for reasonable prices.
