Boards of Canada’s Music Has the Rights to Children Album Cover Blurred Faces

The blurred faces on the album cover of Boards of Canada’s “Music Has the Rights to Children” evokes an old, nostalgic, feel.

While the album cover may have been intentionally blurred (it is not known for sure), the same blurred face effect can be seen in old television commercials on VHS tape.

You can see blurred faces in old commercials from the Ontario Ministry of Health (see below). These are not intentionally blurred but are rather blurred by the technology used at the time. The resolution of the video is not so good and so in certain frames, the faces become blurred.

Other portions are not blurry. It is a product of the video that they are sometimes blurred. Maybe this is a VHS artifact?

An image from the same commercial that is not blurred. Only certain parts are blurry probably due to the VHS or television broadcast artifacts (not sure).
